 Tawera Nikau

Tawera is one of New Zealand's most successful professional athletes. He first played for the Kiwi's in 1990. He was also one of the founding players for the Warriors before switching to the Melbourne Storm who achieved great success in their first year by winning the NRL Championship. His prowess was recognised with contracts offered from all over the world. He has been recognised with many accolades, including being named three times in the Rugby League World X111 as the best lock in the world.
Following his retirement from professional sport, Tawera is committed to giving back to the communities that have given him so much. He was the top billed fighter at the 2002 Fight for Life, raising tens of thousands of dollars for suicide prevention. He is now involved in coaching rugby league.
As a businessman, Tawera is a very successful property investor. He is also a Director of the Training company Team One and is an accredited facilitator of their highly sought after PowerTrain programme. Tawera says PowerTrain helped him so much personally that he wants to pass the principles on to others. He has established a programme in his hometown of Huntly attached to the Whare Wananga o Aotearoa, which is training people to take their place in the workforce with new skills. He has completed a Diploma in Tertiary Teaching and is now studying for his Bachelor of Education.
In July 2003 Tawera badly injured his leg in a motor cycle accident. Given the choice of months in hospital and numerous operations to try and save his leg, Tawera took the choice of having his leg removed so he could get back home to his children. He was back at work two months after leaving hospital. His goal is now to compete in the next Paralympics.
Tawera is an excellent communicator, and people from all walks of life appreciate his down-to-earth delivery.
