Master Builders Guide to Building Administration Best Practice

The construction industry is complex, and as businesses grow, managing administrative tasks becomes more challenging.

This manual aims to limit risk and guide members through these tasks and requirements on their path to becoming an accomplished builder and business owner.

The manual is divided into six key sections: Tendering, Pricing, Contract Administration, Contracts, Employment, and Health & Safety. It includes master document templates, letters, contracts, and spreadsheets that members can adapt for their specific needs.

The guide serves as a helpful reference for tasks like tendering, pricing, calculating charge out rates and comparing overheads and P&G.

Acknowledgements

Ash Hartley, past National President of Master Builders, devoted considerable time between 2008 and 2010 to creating the original Guide to Building Administration Best Practice. His efforts were widely recognised and well-received across New Zealand.

The current edition has been updated by Justin Carnie, President of the Central Otago branch (2025). With over 30 years of experience, Justin has refreshed the guide, adding new content to keep it relevant for today’s builders. He first encountered the guide in 2010, during a Master Builders workshop led by Ash Hartley.

Master Builders is grateful for the invaluable contributions of Ash Hartley and Justin Carnie to the development and enhancement of the Guide to Building Administration Best Practice. Their dedication and expertise have helped ensure that this essential resource remains relevant and beneficial for our members everywhere.
