The Upper South Island Apprentice of the Year Regional Winner is...🛠️

The top three Apprentices from the Upper South Island region have been announced for the 2022 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year.

The Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition tests our future sector leaders' project management, business, presentation, and practical skills.

For the regional competition, each apprentice had to initially submit a building project. They then took part in a two-hour practical challenge where they were tasked with building a sawhorse. The top 10 from each region then progressed to the interview stage with a judging panel and an onsite visit to discuss their project.

34 year old Jeremy Pearce from Motueka has been named the Upper South Island 2022 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Jeremy's training provider is BCITO and he is employed by Scott Construction.

Judges said "Jeremy is an apprentice who is well regarded by his peers. He showed very good knowledge of his worksite and health and safety, understanding all facets of the build. Jeremy demonstrated professionalism and good communication skills during his interview. He was able to clearly explain his plans, materials, and the legislative requirements, and if he didn’t know the answer, he knew where to find the information."
Second place went to Fenton Neal, 29. His training provider is BCITO and he's employed by Fairfield Construction.

"Fenton had a great interview with the judges, showing a good understanding of his building site through well-thought-out answers. This was reinforced by a very good site visit, where Fenton was able to clearly explain the job to the judges and its progress. Fenton understands there is much to learn and his keenness to continue learning through his current employer demonstrates his real passion for building."
Third place went to Harper McGee, 21. His training provider is BCITO and he is employed by Rowberry Builders.

"Harper had a good practical challenge, delivering a very tidy result and demonstrated good consistency in his work. He was able to back up a very good written submission during his interview, explaining the project confidently to the judges. Although his site visit was different to his submission, he presented it very well, proving he had a good understanding of the project. Harper had a great attitude during the competition and a real enthusiasm for building."

The top apprentice from each region will then go on to compete in the National Competition in Auckland. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test, followed by the National Awards Dinner where we will announce the winner.
