Southern region’s finest home builds announced

20th July 2019

A home in Cromwell and a home in Arrowtown have won Supreme Awards at this year’s Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year competition.

Spearhead Developments won the Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme House of the Year award for their leading-edge architectural design and high level of craftsmanship. They also took out the CARTERS New Home $1 million - $1.5 million category, and the Local Craftsmanship Award.

BTP Construction won the Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme Renovation of the Year award for their clever use of recycled materials. They also won the Renovation $500,000 - $1 million category.

Judges said the winning Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year was a challenging build, yet everything had been crafted to perfection to seamlessly fit into its environment.

“There are long shallow sloping hand pitch roofs and ceilings throughout, with hips and gutters that appear to have grown from the natural schist and grasses.

“The acute angles and long slopping windows almost blend the ceilings and walls together as one.

“The oak ceiling panels throughout the home have been faultlessly perfected, and the borrowed glass panels flood light throughout the entire home.

“All roofing, detailed rainwater heads and cladding flashings have been crafted to a level that shows this house has the highest level of craftsmanship and very much deserves to be a Supreme winner.”

Judges said the winning Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 Renovation of the Year was a seamless transformation of old meets new and retains its charm of what it used to be.

“The home cleverly uses recycled materials, such as beams and posts. There is also corrugated cladding installed as a rain screen with its original fixing penetrations showing.

“When you enter the home, there is a central drop zone or mud room with a wood burner that is both cosy and welcoming. This area connects the home from its separate self-contained unit on one side to the rest of the home that flows through to its north/west facing living areas.

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday 20 July at Dunedin Town Hall. The winning builds were celebrated by the region’s Registered Master Builders and members of the local construction industry.

Overall there were 19 Gold Award winners from Southern area, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Top 100 Gold Award finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 23 November at Cordis Hotel in Auckland.

The Awards are made possible through the support of Altus Windows, Bunnings Trade, CARTERS, GIB, Master Build Services 10 Year Guarantee, PlaceMakers, Plumbing World, and Resene.

About the Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year

The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second at a national level. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.

The top local Gold Award winners become Top 100 Gold Award National Finalists. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national winners, which are announced at the National event in Auckland on 23 November.
