Constructive 2017 will be held on 2-4 August in Auckland.

Led by the Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA), Constructive is a national construction forum that will bring the industry together to discuss sector issues and create a platform for resolving those issues collaboratively.

The industry needs to take much more of a leadership role and support sector development and this forum is a major step towards this. Through sharing ideas and experiences and challenging the norm, the industry is better able set itself mandates for change and take the lead for an improved operating environment.

In 2016, Constructive focused on the lessons learnt from the Christchurch earthquakes and the Global Financial Crisis and how, nationally, the sector has had to react and adapt to survive and thrive.

The programme consisted of informative and interactive panel discussions made up of leaders from the industry in both residential and commercial construction.  They shared insights into the transformation of their businesses to meet the changing demands of the industry and, in some cases, launch into new markets.

Leaders from across the construction sector attended and participated. Delegates gained knowledge on how to evolve and grow their businesses while meeting a broad cross section of like-minded folk within the industry.

Constructive is owned by RMBA and supported by a family of sponsors and partner organisations and was held in Christchurch on 21-23 September 2016.

House of the Year

The Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards celebrate the very best in residential building from new homes and show homes to renovations and builder’s own homes.
The competition has been running for more than 25 years, recognising the craftsmanship of New Zealand’s best builders from across the sector, including affordable homes and through to luxury buildings.

The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second at a national level.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners, and the Regional Supreme Winners for both new builds and renovations, are judged by a team of experts using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August. All of the houses are featured on the House of the Year website and in Regional magazines delivered direct to homes throughout the regions.

The top 100 Gold Award winners become Gold Reserve National Finalists. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national category winners and the National Supreme Winners, which are announced at the National event in Auckland on Saturday 18 November. The winning homes are showcased in the National House of the Year magazine that is available from all good magazine retailers in early December.

New Zealand Commercial Projects Awards

Founded in 2013 the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards builds on the success of the RMB Commercial Project Awards, which set the benchmark for commercial building in New Zealand.

These prestigious awards are now open to all New Zealand commercial contractors and their significant construction partners e.g. Architects, Building Owners, Engineers and Quantity Surveyors etc.

Designed by a group of commercial contractors who are committed to celebrating excellence in their craft, these awards aim to:

  • Promote and encourage excellent building processes and practices within the commercial contracting sector
  • Celebrate the quality of work and craftsmanship required in delivering a superior commercial project while promoting the wider team
  • Promote the contractors contribution to the construction relationship and the genuine value of the construction process

The Awards Gala will be held on 12 May 2017. For more information click here.

Apprentice of The Year

The Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year, in association with Carters, aims to recognise excellence among carpentry apprentices and raise awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. It’s a competition that looks to test several aspects of a well-rounded apprentice, not just their skills on the tools.

Apprentices, you can enter whether or not you work for a Registered Master Builder. Employers, we encourage all of you and particularly our Business Members to put their best apprentices forward for this competition, it’s a fantastic experience and the prize pool is fantastic. Employers can read about the benefits here. Prior years’ entrants have said they got the following out of entering:

  • A chance to compare themselves against other apprentices to see how they stack up
  • Recognition of their skills, which is valuable for future employment opportunities
  • The process of preparing the entry form, and for finalists being interviewed and having a site visit was a great learning experience, and a chance to meet industry people and network
  • Built confidence in themselves and their skills.

Entries open 10 April and close 6 June. The national final and awards are in November. For more information please click here.
