AUCKLAND

Winner - Oliver Wooles

His joinery background was evident in the quality of detail throughout, while his interview showed a level of maturity that impressed the judges. He spoke confidently about the project and demonstrated an understanding of the wider industry beyond the tools, including communication, business operations and project administration.

The site visit reinforced the pride Oliver takes in his work, with the quality of the finishing and his organisation standing out. He then delivered one of the strongest practical assessments in the region, working methodically and accurately to produce a finished result that was difficult to fault. Oliver’s consistently high standard across the competition made an outstanding impression on the judges and marks him as a highly deserving regional winner. Well done, Oliver.

Second Place - Connor Glengarry

Connor’s exceptionally well-organised submission reflected his strong involvement in the project and willingness to take responsibility on site. He clearly explained the work completed and showed how he had stepped up when opportunities arose to take the lead. During the interview, Connor presented confidently and demonstrated sound knowledge across areas including health and safety, timber treatments and structural building principles.

His site visit showcased the high standards he has developed through working on architectural and heritage homes. The judges were impressed by his eye for detail and the pride he takes in his workmanship, from structural elements through to intricate finishing. Connor carried this into the practical challenge, managing his time effectively and completing the project to a very high standard, while still allowing time for sanding and presentation. His commitment to quality gives him a strong foundation for the future. Congratulations, Connor.

Third Place - Noah Rooke

Noah’s detailed submission demonstrated excellent technical knowledge and a strong understanding of a complex project. His involvement in challenging work, including a curved bay window sill, highlighted the valuable experience he has gained, while his role as an apprentice leader showed his willingness to take on responsibility and support others.

During the interview and site visit, Noah impressed with his knowledge of building codes, passive house principles and the technical details of the project. He confidently explained his involvement and demonstrated genuine pride in achieving high-quality outcomes. In the practical challenge, Noah planned his work well, maintained a tidy workspace and completed a well-presented project with a good overall finish. His technical ability and leadership potential make him an impressive apprentice with plenty of opportunity ahead. Bravo, Noah.

NORTHERN

Winner - Benjamin Plummer

Benjamin’s submission reflected his passion for the industry and his determination to continually improve. His professionally presented entry showed that he had been involved in the project from the outset, while his aspirations and commitment to developing his skills came through strongly. One judge considered his submission the strongest in the group.

Benjamin was equally impressive during the site visit, confidently guiding the judges through the project and clearly explaining his responsibilities across the different stages of construction. His knowledge of building products and the Building Code reinforced the strength of his performance. In the practical challenge, Benjamin worked diligently and completed the build to a high standard, demonstrating good practical skills and a strong commitment to quality. His enthusiasm and drive to become the best builder he can be set him apart as a standout apprentice and a deserving regional winner. Congratulations, Benjamin.

Second Place - Marcos Coelho

Marcos produced an exceptional submission that reflected the considerable effort he invested in documenting his project. The judges were impressed by its detailed written content and supporting technical information, with one describing it as among the best submissions they had encountered in seven years of judging. His passion for learning and desire to be involved across the building process were clear throughout.

During the site visit, Marcos confidently guided the judges through the completed build and clearly identified the areas where he had been directly involved. His supervisor also spoke highly of his contribution and attitude. In the practical challenge, Marcos worked safely and methodically, maintaining an organised workspace and demonstrating good practical skills. His commitment to learning and the contribution he is already making at this stage of his apprenticeship left a strong impression. Bravo, Marcos.

Third Place - Zach Stibbe

Zach’s submission was concise and easy to follow, clearly outlining his involvement in the project and his plans for continued development. His positive attitude and determination were evident throughout, showing an apprentice who is motivated to keep strengthening his skills and progressing within the industry.

Zach communicated confidently during the site visit and showed a strong understanding of the project, including detailed knowledge of the deck and glass balustrade installation. His employer also spoke positively about his attitude and contribution to the team. In the practical challenge, Zach worked steadily and demonstrated good health and safety awareness, completing the task to a good standard. His motivation and commitment to continual improvement give him a strong platform to build on as his experience grows. Well done, Zach.

The top apprentice from every region now steps onto the national stage, ready to prove their skills through a 45-minute interview and an intense six-hour hands-on challenge at the National Finals in Auckland, 9-10 October.
