 The 2026 Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year winners for the Waikato region have been decided, shining a spotlight on the outstanding skill, professionalism, and leadership of our future industry leaders.

Now in its 23rd year, Apprentice of the Year continues to recognise the best emerging talent in carpentry – apprentices who are not just building homes, but building futures.
 

Winner - Matt Strawbridge

Employer - Foster Construction
Training provider - BCITO

Matt’s submission showed excellent knowledge of his project, with clear detail around the materials used and the reasons behind key construction decisions. During the interview, he stood out as a confident thinker with an impressive understanding of the Building Act and Building Code. The judges were particularly struck by how advanced his industry knowledge was after only two and a half years in the trade.

Matt carried this same considered approach into the practical challenge. He carefully evaluated the full project before beginning and was the only apprentice to cut all grooves before trimming the timber to length. His time management was excellent, while his clean workstation and strong focus on health and safety reflected a highly professional approach. Matt’s technical ability and performance across every stage of the competition marked him as a standout apprentice and a highly deserving regional winner. Bravo, Matt.
 

Second Place - Jack Strawbridge

Jack’s submission highlighted the depth of his experience, initiative, and his commitment to continually improving his skills. He spoke about his project with accuracy throughout the interview, demonstrating a fantastic understanding of best building practice and health and safety. His clear communication and ability to think confidently under pressure made him a pleasure for the judges to interview.

Jack delivered the standout site visit of the competition. He addressed areas that had not been fully covered during the interview and showed excellent knowledge of the project, while the exceptional finishing standard reflected the pride he takes in his work. During the practical challenge, Jack also displayed strong planning and managed his time well. His initiative and attention to quality mark him as a highly capable apprentice with an exciting future ahead. Congratulations, Jack.
 

Third Place - Kaden Wenham

Kaden’s well-presented submission demonstrated his motivation and practical approach to the trade. During the interview, Kaden presented himself professionally and spoke well about his experience. He also took the judges’ feedback on board, returning to the site visit ready to address the areas that had not been fully covered earlier.

Kaden led an excellent site induction and confidently guided the judges through the project, showing a strong understanding of the work involved. In the practical challenge, he produced a well-finished, completed project and showed real determination as time ran down. His ability to respond to feedback and strengthen his performance across the competition reflects a positive attitude towards learning. Kaden has built a solid foundation for continued growth in the industry. Well done, Kaden.
 

The top apprentice from every region now steps onto the national stage, ready to prove their skills through a 45-minute interview and an intense six-hour hands-on challenge at the National Finals in Auckland, 9-10 October.
