New Zealand's Supreme Homes Announced!

14 December 2020

On Friday night we announced the National House of the Year winners for 2020. The competition started in early January and continued throughout the year with the judging of the 359 entries, 10 regional virtual awards, 16 Master Builders hosted watch parties, and culminated in the national virtual awards which were held on Friday night.

It was a fantastic night of celebration with over 400 people from across the industry tuning in to watch. All up, over 3,000 people have watched the virtual regional  and national awards - a great outcome for a very challenging year.

Supreme House of the Year
Triple Star Management Limited, based in Queenstown, took home the Supreme House of the Year Build for their Southern House. The build also received the Resene New Home over $2 million, and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence awards.

Judges were impressed with the powerful presence of this well-built home, carefully positioned to take advantage of the lake and mountain views, growing into its landscape.

"This home is an outstanding example of the builder's attention to detail. Clever use of natural materials creates an intriguing home that has visual warmth and a harmonious balance. The geometry stirs the imagination with a dramatic use of steeply pitched roofs, sculptured shapes, and five interconnecting pavilions. It’s clear that this incredible home has been designed and built to successfully offer comfortable living.”

“The flawless implementation of these details proves this build was no easy feat,” said the judges.

Supreme Renovation of the Year
Taupo based Haimes Building won Renovation of the Year. They also walked away with the Bunnings Renovation Over $1 Million award.

Judges said this renovation, that was two years in the making, was an impressive example of collaboration between the passionate homeowners, a clever designer, and a craftsman builder.

“Renovations always present challenges, require great planning, and need lot of thinking along the way to incorporate the new, maintain the old, and create a seamless result. From the hinuera stone personally laid at the entry, to the endless straightening of the original structure to cope with the unforgiving new light from the atrium windows on the gib board, the workmanship has been executed beautifully. This is a wonderful alteration that the owners clearly enjoy and has been built to stand the test of time.”

We asked our sponsor to share their highlights

House of the Year is made possible through the support of all of our sponsors. We asked them to share their own thoughts on this year’s competition.

Altus Window Systems
“2020’s House of the Year entrants have made a distinctive move to more dark and notably black window joinery. The use of Protexture™ Black Flat has been emerging trend that really adds a modern contrasting look, with the benefit of being scratch and mark resistant. Available exclusively from our Fabricator network: Bradnam’s, Fisher, Nebulite, Nulook, Rylock & Vistalite”.
- Nigel Owen, Marketing Manager, Altus Window Systems

“CARTERS is proud to continue to sponsor House of the Year and celebrate the success of our building partners. Each year we see the calibre of entries grow, reflecting on the quality of our craftsmen around our country. CARTERS continues to innovate to support our builders who are striving for perfection. Congratulations to the very deserving award winners.”
- Mike Guy, CEO, CARTERS

Winstone Wallboards (GIB)
“This year has seen the building industry, like the rest of New Zealand becoming increasingly flexible to meet the new market opportunities and challenges arising from the Covid-19. Its pleasing to see the House of the Year competition also evolve to both meet this new environment and also to see the high calibre of competition entries received from across the country. All of the finalists at this year’s event have demonstrated a high level of professionalism and skill and it’s great to see the excitement and pride of the winners as they are recognised by their peers. Congratulations to all this year’s finalists”.
- Clara Sumner, Partnership Manager, Winstone Wallboards

Plumbing World
“Another stunning array of homes for the 30th Year of House of the Year.  The bathrooms are once again stand outs as extra care is being taken to create truly beautiful spaces that tie in with the environment.  Loving seeing ‘black’ still being prominent for fixtures, joinery and external cladding.”
- Sarah Vining, Marketing Manager, Plumbing World

“At Resene, we’re always impressed by the quality of entries and the attention to detail in the finishing of the Master Builder House of the Year winning projects. This year we especially enjoyed the classic and timeless colour palettes that can be so easily dressed up with each owner’s personality and treasures. For most of us decorating our homes is a lifelong journey as our tastes and treasures change. These neutral backdrops are so versatile that owners can incorporate their favourite on-trend colours and fashion pieces over time without having to replace everything”.
- Karen Warman, Marketing Manager, Resene
