Getting Members Back to Work at Alert Levels 3 and 2
Through the Accord, Master Builders, several members, industry leaders, and other organisations like CHASNZ are working together to develop safe return to work processes for all who work in and around the construction sector. Master Builders is involved directly with developing the processes for commercial and residential builders and contractors.
What does this mean:
- For businesses to open under Alert Level 3 they, at a minimum, must be able to implement good health and safety processes, including physical distancing, hygiene and tracking of persons that address risks posed by COVID-19.
- To provide support for the sector, these processes will be developed into a set of standards (which cover what at a minimum must be achieved) and protocols (guidance on how to achieve the standard)
- The standard and the protocol will be up on our website and we will also be sending them to members electronically. Videos, posters, and diagrams are also being developed and we will provide links to these once they become available.
There will be questions raised about how the standards and protocols are to be applied on sites and Master Builders will also provide ongoing support in interpretation and advice.
This work is high priority and we are aiming to release it to members later next week.
At this stage, the Government has not made any decisions.
COVID-19 Government Contract Guidelines
On Sunday, the Government released their Construction Sector Response Plan and today they released the first action from it, the Government Contract Guidelines. As part of the Accord Steering Group, Master Builders has been involved in the development of these Guidelines. It’s a positive step and acknowledges the important role government agencies need to play in supporting the construction sector during this lockdown.
Ministers are directing agencies within their portfolios to follow new Guidelines that will ensure cash keeps flowing in the sector to maintain businesses and jobs during the shutdown. The directive is being sent to the Chief Executives of all agencies engaged in construction and infrastructure projects including ministries, state-owned enterprises, district health boards and tertiary education institutions.
If members over the coming weeks still experience difficulties with government agencies who are not following these Guidelines, please get in touch.
