The Central South Island Apprentice of the Year Regional Winner is..🛠️

Celebrating over two decades of excellence among carpentry apprentices, Registered Master Builders, in partnership with CARTERS, is proud to announce the top three apprentices for the Central South Island region.
Adam Harford from Kaiapoi has been named the Central South Island 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Adam was trained through BCITO and is employed by Trent Builders.
In second place was Jamie Pottinger from Burnside, Christchurch. Jamie is employed by Southen Builders and trained through BCITO. Third place was awarded to Carl Smith from St Martins, Christchurch, who is employed by Cook Brothers Construction and trained through Builders Academy.
Now in its 21st year, the Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition assesses the project management, business presentation, and practical skills of future leaders in the sector.
Judges' comments for first placegetter, Adam Harford
Throughout the competition, Adam displayed impressive knowledge and his performance in the practical test was remarkable, reflecting his advanced skills on the tools. Adam's submission demonstrated a solid understanding of his project, providing detailed explanations of the process and materials used.
Adam's well-organised and comprehensive tool kit further highlighted his dedication to his craft. It is truly impressive to see such advanced skills in a young apprentice; Adam is a standout talent in the building industry. Congratulations, Adam!
Judges' comments for second placegetter, Jamie Pottinger
As an adult apprentice, Jamie has made a commendable transition into the building industry after several years in civil construction. His background has provided him with valuable skills and experience, making his transition smooth and effective.
Jamie is a confident leader, capable of taking on most tasks with minimal supervision. His leadership skills and proactive approach are noteworthy. Jamie's dedication and abilities make him a valuable asset to any employer. Well done, Jamie!
Judges' comments for third placegetter, Carl Smith
Carl was the only apprentice from the commercial sector, bringing a unique perspective to the Central South Island competition. As an adult apprentice with a background in joinery, Carl's attention to detail is outstanding. He has adapted to building effortlessly, quickly picking up new skills. Carl is expected to progress from apprentice to tradesman with relative ease and will succeed in any area he chooses within the sector due to his strong foundation and keen eye for detail. Great work, Carl!
National Competition
The top apprentice from each region will now go head-to-head and compete in the national competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test. The national competition will take place on 7 - 8 November in Auckland at CONZTRUCT.
