Celebrating over two decades of excellence among carpentry apprentices, Registered Master Builders, in partnership with CARTERS, is proud to announce the top three apprentices for the Auckland and Northern region.
Daniel Smith from Onehunga, Auckland took out the Auckland 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year title. Daniel is employed by Structured Builders and was trained through Manukau Institue of Technology. In second place was Barjonah Buxton, from Swanson, Auckland, employed by PDB Homes, and in third place was George Harris from Te Atatu South, Auckland, employed by Deftcon. Barjonah and George were both trained through BCITO.
Haylee Lemon from Glenfield, Auckland has been named the Northern 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Haylee was trained through BCITO and is employed by Kevin Goodall Builders. In second place was Sam McAllister from Belmont, Auckland. Sam is employed by Close And Co and trained through BCITO. Third place was awarded to Luke Hempel from Waitoki, Auckland, who is employed by Glover Homes and trained through BCITO.
Now in its 21st year, the Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition assesses the project management, business presentation, and practical skills of future leaders in the sector.

Judges' comments for first placegetter, Daniel Smith
Daniel's submission showcased his dedication and passion for the building industry through detailed presentations of both a new build and a renovation project. His thoroughness, especially in discussing building standards, health and safety, and resource consents, set him apart. Daniel's commitment to continuous learning, demonstrated by his attendance at workshops on new products, further highlighted his proactive approach.
Daniel performed exceptionally well in the practical event, showcasing his organisational skills and delivering a high-standard finished product. During the interview and site visit, Daniel continued to impress with his knowledge, presentation, and thoughtful responses. His employer praised his initiative in staying up-to-date with industry innovations and making site improvement suggestions. Daniel’s professionalism and enthusiasm make him one of the most impressive apprentices we have encountered. Congratulations, Daniel.
Judges' comments for second placegetter, Barjonah Buxton:
Barjonah performed admirably, using thoughtful methodology and producing high quality work. His submission provided a good overview of his project, with a strong "why me" section and candid discussion about managing ADHD and dyslexia. Barjonah’s openness and resilience are commendable.
During the interview, Barjonah impressed with his product knowledge and deep understanding of industry standards. His dedication, exemplified by his daily commute from Auckland to Waikato, was remarkable. Well done, Barjonah.
Judges' comments for third placegetter, George Harris:
George excelled with his smart presentation and in-depth knowledge of his project. His engineering background was evident in his familiarity with product specifications and warranties, and it was noteworthy that he kept a digital copy of NZS3604 on hand for reference. At the site visit, George continued to impress with his well-organised van and tools.
George's submission was honest and inspiring, particularly his "why me" section. The submission was well laid out, with a good balance of written explanation and photos. Overall, he demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication, making him a strong candidate in the competition. He has a bright future ahead – well done, George!
Northern Region
Judges' comments for first placegetter, Haylee Lemon
Haylee’s submission was excellent, showcasing a personal project which she completed entirely on her own. At the practical challenge, Haylee performed exceptionally, and her careful reading of plans and organised approach were evident in the high standard of her work.
During the interview and site visit, Haylee impressed with her in-depth knowledge, motivation, and excellent communication skills. Her ability to handle clients and contractors effectively highlights her strong potential in the industry. Haylee has established herself as a standout apprentice in this competition and is one to watch. Well done, Haylee.
Judges' comments for second placegetter, Sam McAllister:
Sam performed very well in the practical event and the quality of his work was commendable. He excelled in interpreting and following the plans, and his tools were of high quality.
Throughout the competition, Sam excelled across all categories. His knowledge truly shone during the interview and site visit, reflecting his passion for the field. Sam’s dedication and consistent performance make him a stellar apprentice. Congratulations, Sam.
Judges' comments for third placegetter, Luke Hempel:
At the practical challenge, Luke excelled, delivering his project to a very high standard. He also maintained excellent health and safety practices, and despite the time pressure, Luke kept a positive attitude throughout the build.
During the interview and site visit, Luke stood out as one of the most impressive apprentices seen in years of judging. His comprehensive technical knowledge and talent, combined with experience working for one of Auckland's top builders, mark him as a standout young chippy. Excellent work, Luke!
National Competition
The top apprentice from each region will now go head-to-head and compete in the national competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test. The national competition will take place on 7 - 8 November in Auckland at CONZTRUCT.
