The Southern Apprentice of the Year Regional Winner is..🛠️

Celebrating over two decades of excellence among carpentry apprentices, Registered Master Builders, in partnership with CARTERS, is proud to announce the top three apprentices for the Southern region.

Sam Hoskins from Lake Hawea has been named the Southern 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Sam was trained through BCITO and is employed by Dunlop Builders. 

In second place was Cody Harvey from West Plains, Invercargill. Cody is employed by Cavalier Homes and trained through BCITO. Third place was awarded to Oliver Hughes from Dunedin who is employed by Stewart Construction and trained through BCITO.

Now in its 21st year, the Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition assesses the project management, business presentation, and practical skills of future leaders in the sector. 

 
 



Judges' comments for first placegetter, Sam Hoskins

Sam’s performance in the competition was outstanding. His submission was well laid out, detailed, and reflected his strong technical knowledge. In the practical challenge, Sam showcased excellent planning skills, working smoothly and confidently.
 
Sam's strong communication skills and willingness to learn were evident during the interview and site visit.  Working with a solid team, Sam is on the path to becoming a well-rounded and skilled carpenter. Congratulations, Sam!

 



Judges' comments for second placegetter, Cody Harvey
Cody’s enthusiasm for building was evident during the interview and site visit, showcasing his dedication to becoming a skilled builder. He submitted a strong entry, and his practical skills were excellent.  

Displaying confidence and precision with his tools, he completed his project to a very high standard. His problem-solving skills shone, as he effectively managed an issue with a split piece of timber. Cody was also praised for his professionalism, presenting himself as eager, polite, and thoughtful. Cody is sure to be a top contender in the future. Excellent work, Cody!


Judges' comments for third placegetter, Oliver Hughes 
Oliver is a committed and skilled apprentice with a bright future ahead. He provided a well-rounded submission, combining a good mix of photos and detailed descriptions. His tools were tidy and sharp, and he demonstrated strong planning skills. His approach to health and safety was commendable, and he applied good methodology in his work.  

During the interview, Oliver’s enthusiasm for building was clear, and this was further reinforced during his site visit. His commitment and positive attitude make him a dedicated apprentice who clearly enjoys the work he’s doing with his team. Well done, Oliver!

National Competition
The top apprentice from each region will now go head-to-head and compete in the national competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test. The national competition will take place on 7 - 8 November in Auckland at CONZTRUCT.
