The Upper South Island Apprentice of the Year Regional Winner is..🛠️

Celebrating over two decades of excellence among carpentry apprentices, Registered Master Builders, in collaboration with CARTERS, is proud to announce the top three apprentices for the Upper South Island region.

Dylan Gelling from Ruby Bay has been named the Upper South Island 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Dylan was trained through Builders Academy and is employed by Ruby Bay Construction.

In second place was Bailey Sherratt from Richmond. Bailey is employed by Jason Frater Builders and trained through Builders Academy. Third place was awarded to Alfred Johnson from Nelson, who is employed by Roger Kenning Builders and trained through BCITO.

Now in its 21st year, the Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition assesses the project management, business presentation, and practical skills of future leaders in the sector. 

 



Judges' comments for first placegetter, Dylan Gelling 

Dylan stands out as a role model for aspiring young tradespeople, demonstrating a positive outlook and a commendable attitude towards learning. Rather than rushing to complete his qualification, it is evident Dylan is focused on becoming the best builder he can be.  
During the interview and site visit, Dylan displayed a deep understanding of the complexities involved in his project. His knowledge of the building process and industry standards is impressive, and his leadership skills are steadily developing. Dylan’s mature attitude onsite indicates a promising future in the construction industry. Congratulations, Dylan! 

 


 



Judges' comments for second placegetter, Bailey Sherratt
Bailey's written submission was outstanding, well-organised, and complemented by great photography. His confident walkthrough of the project showcased his involvement, attention to detail, and pride in maintaining a high standard of work. 
During the interview, Bailey excelled in discussing his understanding of the building process and day-to-day site management. Bailey's passion for learning and teaching is truly commendable, making him a standout apprentice with a promising future. Well done, Bailey! 

Judges' comments for third placegetter, Alfred Johnson 
As a well-rounded and capable apprentice, Alfred sets high standards for himself, and his quiet confidence shone through during his site visit. He demonstrated a solid understanding of the project's details and his ability to read and interpret working drawings was impressive.  
Alfred’s submission was excellent, providing detailed insights into the project with references to NZS3604 and specific details that showcased his strong building knowledge and understanding of industry standards. Great work, Alfred! 

National Competition
The top apprentice from each region will now go head-to-head and compete in the national competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test. The national competition will take place on 7 - 8 November in Auckland at CONZTRUCT.
