Celebrating over two decades of excellence among carpentry apprentices, Registered Master Builders, in collaboration with CARTERS, is proud to announce the top three apprentices for the Bay of Plenty / Central Plateau region.
Hunter Moon from Hamilton has been named the Waikato 2024 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice of the Year. Hunter was trained through BCITO and is employed by Foster Construction.
In second place was Harry Phipps from Morrinsville. Harry is employed by Tim Whittle Homes and trained through BCITO. Third place was awarded to Keegan Comber from Okoroire who is employed by Mark Wilcox Builders and trained through BCITO.
Now in its 21st year, the Apprentice of the Year competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry. The competition assesses the project management, business presentation, and practical skills of future leaders in the sector.
Judges' comments for first placegetter, Hunter Moon
Hunter is an exceptional apprentice with a deep understanding of the building industry and strong knowledge of the building code. His work onsite, including finishing lines, hanging doors, and installing hardware, was completed to a very high standard.
During the practical challenge, it was evident that Hunter put significant care into his work. The bench seat he constructed was meticulously measured, with beautifully cut and sanded holes, showcasing his craftsmanship. Hunter let his workmanship speak for itself, leaving a lasting impression on the judges. Well done, Hunter.

Harry impressed the judges with his enthusiasm, competence, and forward-thinking approach, all qualities of a top-tier apprentice. His motivation to succeed was evident throughout the competition, and his planning and preparation were outstanding. Judges' comments for third placegetter, Keegan Comber
Keegan displayed great attention to detail and a strong skill set, completing his project to a high standard. His keen and competent approach to his work has made a positive impression on both the judges and his colleagues.
Keegan’s good site induction and the high regard in which he is held by his workmates further underscores his skill as an apprentice. Keegan’s commitment to quality and his ability to deliver high-standard work mark him as a having huge potential in the industry. Great job, Keegan!
National Competition
The top apprentice from each region will now go head-to-head and compete in the national competition. This includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and an additional six-hour practical skills test. The national competition will take place on 7 - 8 November in Auckland at CONZTRUCT.
