Canterbury region’s finest home builds announced
26th July 2019
A home in Fendalton and a home in Lyttelton have won Supreme Awards at this year’s Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year competition.
Gregg Builders won the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme House of the Year award for their “modern masterpiece.” They also took out the Resene New Home over $2 million category, and the Plumbing World Bathroom Award
B & D Construction won the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme Renovation of the Year award for their renovation of a 1930’s home.
Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme House of the Year
Judges said the winning Fendalton home by Gregg Builders utilised cutting-edge technology that showcased exceptional design.
“This is a highly specified and beautiful home that boasts innovative design, including motorised glass shade fins, louvres and the black sectional glass-fronted garage doors.
“The vast open plan living areas unfold across the breadth of the home, created in zones to cater for family living and entertainment. Each area flows seamlessly to the landscaped grounds.
“The centrepiece is the double-height entranceway, crowned by the dramatic Arabescato marble spiral staircase leading to the mezzanine gallery, designed to showcase the homeowners’ art collection.
“The owners’ brief for a state-of-the-art, contemporary family home has been well delivered, in a house that truly has the wow factor.”

Judges said the winning Lyttleton renovation by B & D Construction offered beautiful living spaces that captured the holiday experience.
“Nestled on the slopes of Lyttellton Harbour, this three-storey 1930’s gem has been lovingly renovated.
“The weatherboard home has new foundations and new shingle gables. Inside, the home has been renovated, with new rimu wood panelling in the kitchen and dining room, and more panelling in the bathrooms and toilet areas.
“The home features a half-moon window on its top storey and the home’s leadlight windows have been retrofitted with double glazing. Living areas are neutral but the bathrooms show splashes of greens and blues reflecting the harbour views.
“This was a difficult renovation on a difficult site, but the end result is stunning.”
The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Friday 26 July at the C&E Hall, Wigram Air Force Museum in Christchurch. The winning builds were celebrated by the region’s Registered Master Builders and members of the local construction industry.
Overall there were 43 Gold Award winners from the Canterbury area, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Top 100 Gold Award finalists.
National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 23 November at Cordis Hotel in Auckland.
The Awards are made possible through the support of
Altus Windows, Bunnings Trade, CARTERS, GIB, Master Build Services 10 Year Guarantee, PlaceMakers, Plumbing World, and Resene.

About the Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year
The competition is divided into two parts – the first is at a regional level, the second is at a national level.
Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 10 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.
The top 100 homes from the regions will go on to the national awards. They will be re-judged by a panel of national judges, who will determine the overall national winners. These will be announced at the National event in Auckland on 23 November.
