Last Friday we celebrated the best Master Built homes from across the country at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year National Virtual Awards.
Each year we see the calibre of entries continue to grow and the judges were impressed with the exceptional level of quality and innovation from this year’s 347 entrants. We congratulate all of this year’s national winners.
It was a fantastic night of celebration with over 460 people from across the industry tuning in to watch.
W.G. de Gruchy Construction won the Supreme Renovation of the Year Award as well as the Bunnings Renovation Over $1 Million Award, for its home in Auckland.
The judges were impressed by the combination of modern and traditional building skills.
"The builder showed great expertise by completing an outstanding alteration and creating a fantastic new addition. There has been a clear attention to detail throughout this project, with most features requiring and demonstrating an exceptional level of workmanship. This project was a tremendous collaboration between the owners, architects, builders and all other trades. Completed with great passion, this home is an outstanding result." say House of the Year judges.

We asked our sponsors to share their highlights
House of the Year is made possible through the amazing support of all of our sponsors. We asked them to share their own thoughts on this year’s competition
Altus Window Systems
“2021, whilst being a challenging year, has produced some amazing properties. Altus and our Fabricator network; Bradnam’s, Fisher Windows, Nebulite, Nulook, Rylock & Vistalite, are proud to have played a major part in bringing these properties to completion. And we love that so many of our build partners are choosing to reap the benefits of our Sill Protector product, the original Sill Protectors for protecting your new joinery throughout construction.”
- Nigel Owen, Marketing Manager, Altus Window Systems
CARTERS
“Our ongoing partnership with the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition is one CARTERS continues to take great pride in. We know how important it is to back our industry – now more than ever – and one of the many ways we can do that is by recognising excellence and celebrating the success of those who have demonstrated superior craftsmanship in the sector. It’s great to take the time to celebrate these teams and their achievements and we congratulate all of the entrants, finalists and winners for 2021 on their efforts.”
- Mike Guy, CARTERS Chief Executive.
GIB
“While 2021 has been another tricky year for the building industry, it has proven how resilient we all are. Winstone Wallboards is proud to support the House of the Year competition as it evolves to meet the demands of the online environment, and is impressed by the continued high-calibre of entries. This year we have again seen an exceptional level of craftsmanship and creativity across the board. Congratulations to all finalists, and all those who took part in the competition.”
- Clara Sumner, Partnership Manager, Winstone Wallboards
Pink Batts
" These national finals continue to be a landmark event for the industry, and we are delighted to back them as a National Sponsor. Without the support of the many Master Builders over our 60-year history of manufacturing here in Aotearoa, New Zealand, we wouldn’t have a brand we are proud to represent today. Thank you.
It was a natural choice for us to support the Craftmanship award, one held in such high regards. The winners across the regions have been phenomenal and have highlighted the importance of the workmanship of the internal structure to create warmer, drier, and more sustainable homes.
Something we care deeply about. Huge congratulations from our team at Pink Batts to all of you that made it to these National Finals."
- Jo Duggan, National Sales Manager, Tasman Insulation New Zealand
Plumbing World
“This year has been another exceptional performance for House of the Year. Bathrooms continue to be a standout feature, with beautiful spaces being created across the country. We love seeing how craftspeople combine function, style and design to create the perfect room.”
- Sarah Vinning, Marketing Manager, Plumbing World
Resene
“With spending more time at home than we might normally, it’s made all of us realise just what a difference a quality, well thought-out and mindfully decorated home can make to everyday life. At Resene, we’re always impressed by the quality of entries and the attention to detail in the finishing of the House of the Year winning projects.
This year we especially enjoyed how each home has been tailored to suit the way the clients want to live their best life with colour palettes that can be so easily complemented with favourite treasures. For most of us decorating our homes is a lifelong journey as our tastes and treasures change. These home palettes make it easy for each owner to build their own colour story with favourite on-trend colours and fashion pieces and make their house a home”.
-
Karen Warman, Marketing Manager, Resene
Master Build Services
“We are always impressed with the high calibre of entries for House of the Year, and this year is no exception. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, especially LOC Construction, who took out the Master Build 10 Year Guarantee Multi Unit (Apartments/Duplexes/Terrace Housing Award) for its stunning twin-set of townhouses. No matter how big or small the new build or renovation, the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee gives your clients peace of mind and is proud to have protected more than 140,000 Kiwi homes built by our members.”
- Dale Alloway, General Manager, Master Builders
Bunnings
"Bunnings Trade has been a proud sponsor of the House of the Year awards for a number of years. We’re delighted to be associated with the Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA) who showcase the amazing homes being built right across the country, along with the innovation and passion that goes into these projects. Congrats to all the participants!"
- Paul Connolly, Head of Trade NZ, Bunnings
APL Window Solutions
“Sustainable construction with an emphasis on thermal performance and air quality grows in importance all the time. As sponsors of the Sustainable Excellence Award, APL are pleased to be part of a green building movement that will only gain in strength as time goes on. Building smart like this makes financial sense as well as enhancing liveability.”
- Brendon Pritchard, Market Development Manager, APL Window Solutions
