Canterbury
Supreme Winners Announced

On Friday night we announced the Canterbury House of the Year winners for 2022.

This year,  there were 49 beautiful homes entered from around the Canterbury region. The much anticipated event was celebrated at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand and was a fantastic evening of celebration. We hope everyone who attended had a great night.

Supreme House of the Year - Over $1 Million

METZGER BUILDERS LTD (MBL)
For a Home in Fendalton

This home also won the New Home Over $4 million category, Kitchen Excellence Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, Pink Batts Craftmanship Award, Outdoor Living Excellence Award, McKenzie & Willis Interior Design Award, Schneider Electric Smart Home Award, and a Gold Award.

This home is impressive from every aspect, which is reflected in one of the judges’ commenting that in his 14 years of judging House of the Year, this is one of the best homes he has seen. It has the scale of a commercial build, but at the same time is highly liveable and sits comfortably alongside its suburban neighbours. While it would compete with the most luxurious hotel for grandeur, it is also welcoming and unmistakably a family home.

Located at the end of a long, picturesque driveway that crosses the Wairarapa stream, the entry to this home cannot help but build expectations. However, reality defies even the highest expectation. This is a substantial home in anyone’s terms: six bedrooms, six bathrooms, six living areas, an internal swimming pool and changing rooms, and a garage that houses eight-plus cars. This home pushes the boundaries in terms of its ambition, but it does so with a sense of style and grace.

Supreme House of the Year - Under $1 Million

JOHN ROSS ARCHITECTURAL BUILDERS
For a Home in Mount Pleasant

This home also won the Altus Window Systems New Home $750,000 - $1 million category, and Gold Award.

This impressive two-bedroom home perfectly demonstrates how a simple rectangular plan and lean-to building form can be elevated into something truly special. While the build obviously had its challenges because of the steep site, it is without a doubt an uplifting house. Upon entering the home, one cannot help but be impressed with the feeling of spaciousness it imparts.  At a time when people’s budgets are tight, the home exemplifies how modest building materials, with skillful detailing and expert workmanship, can punch well above their weight.

Supreme Renovation of the Year

WILLIAMS ELVIDGE
For a Home in Redcliffs

This home also won the Bunnings Renovation $750,000 - $1.5 million category, and a Gold Award.

Tucked away down a private lane above Redcliff’s sits a home that looks out over the central city and beyond. Like many homes across the city, this house could well have been lost to the Christchurch earthquakes. Suffering from severe damage to both the patios and retaining walls, its restoration is something to be celebrated as this sophisticated, stylish home has been faithfully brought back to its former glory. A well-deserved winner of the Supreme Renovation category.
