Wellington and the Wairarapa region’s finest home builds announced

Friday 12th July 2019

A Te Aro home and a Belmont home won Supreme Awards in this year’s Wellington and Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2019 House of the Year competition.

Wilson Building won the Wellington/Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme House of the Year award for their beautifully crafted home. They also won four other regional awards, including Resene New Home over $2 million category, the Lifestyle Award, the Outdoor Living Award, and the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award.

Scotty’s Construction won the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme Renovation of the Year award for their elegant inner-city apartment. They also won two other regional awards including Bunnings Renovation over $1 million, and the Craftmanship Award.

Judges said the winning House of the Year was a challenging build, due to the precise design requirements and exquisite detail of the living spaces over the three levels.

“The carefully selected materials and colour palette, mixed with luxurious furniture, complement the beautifully crafted chocolate coloured joinery and cedar weatherboarding.

“This home provides a variety of rooms for work/study, play, exercise, and relaxation, all crafted to perfection surrounded by stunning views.”

Judges said the winning Renovation of the Year was a perfect example of changing an inner-city industrial building into an elegant inner-city apartment.

“The project team retained and restored the old staircase and timber flooring on the upper level, as well as the floor markings on the ground level which maintains the building’s history. The ground floor also acts as the garage and art studio, which is adorned with industrial heating solutions.

“This build had precise design requirements, and there were challenging on-site internal joinery and partitions installed. New finishes like hand-textured plaster, plywood panels and coloured glass were added to bring life to the living areas. The outdoor spaces have been carved out of the existing building by removing the infill wall between structural bays, allowing the owners to engage with the city from their secluded private space. This outstanding solution is a beautifully crafted home.”

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Friday 12 July at the Lower Hutt Events Centre. The winning builds were celebrated by the region’s Registered Master Builders and members of the local construction industry.

Overall there were nine Gold Award winners from the Wellington and Wairarapa area, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Top 100 Gold Award finalists.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on 23 November at Cordis Hotel in Auckland.

The Awards are made possible through the support of Altus Windows, Bunnings Trade, CARTERS, GIB, Master Build 10 Year Guarantee, PlaceMakers, Plumbing World, and Resene.
