Our membership types and fees

We have flexible options to support members across their careers and business ventures. Our fees are graduated, offering great value at every level.

Business memberships

Our business memberships suit a range of commercial needs, whether you’re a self-employed contractor, or you run a building and construction company or franchise.

Contractor

A qualified or experienced carpenter who is self-employed and only contracts to a building company.

2026 annual fee: $260 (excl GST)

Residential builder

A primarily residential building company that contracts to the public. Fees are based on turnover.

 2026 annual fees:
- under $500,000  $1,605 (excl GST) 
- $500,000 to $2 million $1,900 (excl GST)
- over $2 million $3,475 (excl GST)

Volume builder

A primarily residential building company that builds more than 10 properties a year but is not part of a franchise.

2026 annual fee: $4,160 (excl GST)

Franchisee

A primarily residential building company that is part of a franchise where the franchisor is a Master Builders member.

2026 annual fee: $3,475 (excl GST)

Franchisor

The head office of a building franchise that actively promotes Master Builders membership to its franchisees.

2026 annual fee: $3,175 (excl GST)

Commercial builder

A primarily non-residential company operating at a local or regional level.

2026 annual fee: $4,160 (excl GST)

Major contractor

A primarily non-residential building company operating in several regions or nationwide.

2026 annual fee: $8,810 (excl GST)



Individual memberships

Our individual memberships are ideal if you’re a builder and don’t run a business or are still growing your skills and experience. You may also be a professional working in the wider industry.

Apprentice

A person undertaking a recognised carpentry qualification.

Fee: FREE for member employees

Student

A person undertaking a recognised construction qualification (for example, supervision, project management, quantity surveying, architecture).

Fee: FREE for member employees, or $30 one-off

Individual

A person who is permanently employed, of good character, and:

  • is an LBP in carpentry or site, or
  • has a recognised carpentry qualification, or
  • has sufficient experience.

2026 annual fee: $135 (excl GST)

Professional

A person who holds a recognised construction qualification (for example, supervision, project management, quantity surveying, architecture).

2026 annual fee: $135 (excl GST)



Retired and life memberships

Our members dedicate their careers to helping build a better New Zealand. We have memberships to recognise long service and help you stay connected with a community of building and construction peers.

Semi-retired

A company owner or director who is still doing some trading.

2026 annual fee: $260 (excl GST)

Retired

A person who no longer works in the building and construction industry.

2026 annual fee: $70 (excl GST)

Life member

Awarded at the discretion of the local branch executive to a long-serving member.

Fee: FREE
